Third Will Work
It may come to a surprise that for Southern Columbia, despite their success in the 80’s and over the recent years, they have never gone beyond the district stage of the team wrestling tournament. But this year, loaded with senior talent, the Tigers were sure of themselves that they’d cross the hump. It started out just as they hoped, topping Athens 45-24 in the first round, but that’s when Montoursville gave them their first hurdle. Despite wins from Jaret Lane and Blake Marks, the Tigers ultimately fell 39-26, sending them into consolations. They first met Towanda, who gave them headaches until they got back-to-back pins from Kevin Olvaney and Steve Toczylousky to seal the match 42-30. But then the big matchup – the Tigers took on Lewisburg in a rematch from earlier in the week, one that Southern dropped 37-34. This time, more was on the line than just momentum. This time, they were playing for third place and a chance into the state tournament. With the match tight late, the outcome of it all didn’t come down to a pin, decision, major decision, or even technical fall. Hunter Murphey was disqualified for flagrant misconduct, giving Toczylousky the win at 195 and ultimately helped give Southern the win 35-24. Lane and Marks both went 4-0 on the day, and now the Tigers will face District 11 runner-up Northwestern Lehigh tonight for the chance to head to Hershey for the state tournament. Here’s the rest of the action over the weekend.
