Steel Curtain

The Southern Columbia Tigers back in Hershey to defend their state title, taking on the “Mercy Boys” of Steel Valley.

Tigers not off to a great start. Freshman Julian Fleming turns the ball over on the opening kickoff, and Steel Valley would need just one play to punch it in.

Fleming and the Tigers respond right away. The freshman wideout comes up with a big catch over the middle to the 31. Then, it’s Cam Young on the receiving end of a 24 yard score…just the third touchdown the Ironmen starting D allowed all season. Game tied 7-7.

Into the second, Southern down 14-7 facing a fourth and goal at the one. On your right, #1 Paris Ford, a Pitt recruit at defensive back, sniffs out the run to Nic Fetterman, stopping the Tigers drive and changing the landscape of the game.

Later in the second, junior Najheir West decided to add to Steel Valley’s big lead, taking the wildcat keeper right to the pylon for a 21-7 lead. But his best run came in the third quarter.

With a commanding 36-7 lead, West gets his ‘beast mode’ on with one of the most unbelievable runs you’ll ever see. He breaks free of one pile, stays on his feet, breaks free of another pile, and races for a 60-yard score as Steel Valley mercy rules Southern with a 49-7 win.

It’s the first time Southern has been mercy ruled since a playoff loss in 2010. Congrats to the Tigers on their runner-up finish.
