Best of the Best

There was a dream scenario on how the PHAC Tournament would find their finalists. Lewisburg’s and Shamokin’s boys and Danville’s and Mt. Carmel’s girls each had only one loss on the season, so the perfect picture would be to see them duke it out as titans. We got the matchup we wanted on the boys side, so we just needed to girls to answer for us last night. Mt. Carmel had the first crack at doing it, and they didn’t have a lot of trouble accomplishing their mission. After falling behind early, the Red Tornadoes stormed back in the second quarter with Nicole Varano sparking a 16-2 run that put them ahead 25-12. They would at one point extend their lead to 18 as they cruised past rival Shamokin 45-34. Their opponent? Well, that wouldn’t be decided until late in the game between Danville and Southern Columbia. It was truly a tale of two quarters to start the game, as the Ironmen took a 13-2 lead in the first before the Tigers rallied back and captured the lead. For the rest of the game, it was a back-and-forth chessmatch, but the final move was made with under 2 minutes to play. With Southern holding a slim 40-39 lead, Danville took the lead on a pair of Paige Harris free throws, and with the Tigers given a chance to retake the advantage, Riley Gass made the game-clinching block that would set up two more free throws as Danville held on for a 43-40 win. Now, the dream scenario takes shape as Danville will play Mt. Carmel tonight for the girls PHAC title at 6pm, while Lewisburg will take on Shamokin for the boys title right after at 7:30. Here’s the rest of last night’s action.
